Let me tell you a story

How does a movement class help me understand my life purpose?

You may be wondering about the claim I make on my website about how coaching and Nia are both effective ways to help us discover our purpose in life. How can that be? Isn’t Nia a fitness class?

Here is my experience:

In 2008 I was feeling lost: lost in my career, lost in my life, at a loss for direction, for how to become happy, or even simply feel better. I was depressed and I was drinking to escape. I recalled that as a child I always loved to dance. As an adult, I would only dance at bars under the influence and even those times were fewer and farther between as my drinking progressed and my isolation grew. Then I found Nia, stepped into my first class and immediately knew something could shift in me. I felt a glimmer of joy, moving my body, guided by my teacher, feeling the emotional ride of the music and movements — I felt the magic! I touched hope in that first class, and I made the decision to keep coming back.

Fast forward through over a decade of sobriety, multiple Nia trainings, thousands of Nia classes and workshops: Nia continues to connect me with my vitality, the aliveness in me that sometimes gets buried but never disappears. Moving opens me up to possibility. Moving my body creates opportunities to release and renew, to feel my emotions as a natural and vital communication of my being.

In Nia class each student is encouraged to listen and dance to the music, to express the emotional resonance they feel and to move their body’s way. We tap the imagination to create a rich buffet of visual stimuli as we dance. The moves are gentle, non-impact, safe and sometimes complex so that we stimulate new neural pathways in the brain. Practicing Nia is one way I am invited to question my thinking and become open to new ways of seeing and being in the world.

Through movement we find health, we realize our natural vitality, we become more fully ourselves by expressing, releasing and healing what needs healing today, in this moment.

Join me for Nia class live over Zoom (class schedule), or have a recording emailed to you to use when it’s convenient. If you are feeling like there is more for you, I invite you to experience  Nia and sense how you feel during and afterwards. I invite you to open up to the possibility that a “fitness class” can help you discover your purpose and pursue your dreams. Nia has done that for me, and continues to be a powerful source for me to find my flow all these years later.

Send me a note and I’ll email you all you need to join us for class.

It could change your life for the better, too.
