"HeLa"...?

What does “HeLa” mean to you?

If you answered “nothing” then I am right with you, or was, until recently when I finished the 2010 book by Rebecca Skloot called The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks .

Not only was this book an engrossing read, but I learned so much about science, medicine, patient consent, and systemic racism.

The author weaves the true story of Henrietta Lacks and “HeLa” cells with her own tireless research alonside members of Henrietta’s family and present-day scientists. I hope you will read this book and share your impressions with me!

“Skloot narrates the science lucidly, tracks the racial politics of medicine thoughtfully, and tells the Lacks family’s often painful history with grace… Science writing is often just about ‘the facts.’ Skloot’s book, her first, is far deeper, braver and more wonderful… Made my hair stand on end.”
