On this Martin Luther King Jr. Day I write from the comfort of a warm place, well sheltered from the snowy cold outside. I had the privilege to see master storyteller and performance artist, Antonio Rocha, perform The Malaga Ship: The Story of Maine and the Middle Passage earlier this afternoon at the Hope Gate Way church in Portland, Maine.

The beauty of Antonio’s performance emanates from his whole being on stage. For years he studied with mime legend, the late, great Tony Montanaro, and even his mentor, Marcel Marceau. Antonio brings the story of the Malaga ship to life through song, movement, historical narrative, and personal storytelling. The emotional ride we are taken on, through the decades of the 1800s up to the present, the heart wrenching details of the suffering and injustice, the contemporary perspective on all these events, and the acknowledgement of the continuation of these stories into present day, all make this performance unforgettable and absolutely necessary at this time.
