Chills

Lately I’ve been getting chills.

I’ve felt chills when I’m working with a coaching client and they say something important, something meaningful—I feel it!

Being aware of the energy in my body, what I’m feeling, as I’m engaged in coaching is just one way I bring my whole self into presence with my clients.

My 15+ years of teaching Nia and practicing sensing my body has trained me well for this coaching work.

As a coach, I understand the power of presence. Being truly present to witness, receive and reflect back, when appropriate, what my clients are saying. This is an incredibly valuable —yet simple and too often overlooked— practice in conversation.

When was the last time you listened, with your whole body, undistracted, to yourself or someone else? I’m talking about really taking the time to be with what is happening as it unfolds in the moment.

The word “presence” comes to us through the ages via Old French from Latin praesentia ‘being at hand’, from the verb praeesse. I like to think of this connection as though I am touching the moment with my presence, drawing a full circle back to the origins of the word.

Maybe what I’m feeling is energy touching my awareness and vice versa. Chills are simply energy translated through my nervous system and felt throughout my body. Powerful stuff! I’m reminded of the song lyrics from the musical Grease:

“I’ve got chills, they’re multiplying

And I’m losing control

Oh, the power you’re supplying

is electrifying!”

I love this! When I am present in my full self: body, emotions, mind, spirit, I can attune to the currents running between us, and respond accordingly. What a gift!
